The way I see it there is one of four scenarios that a computer owner/user faces. (1) After having recently shelled out a few thousand for a computer system, who has any bucks left to purchase software? (2) After having spent numerous hours surfing the World Wide Web, you are bored with visiting the same sites that in the past brought you joy, but at the same time you have no clue where else to go. (3) You utilize the computer as nothing more than a “fancy typewriter” in which case the salesman who sold you the computer really deserved his or her commission on that particular day. (4) You are a “hacker” and are able to attain anything computer-oriented that you desire and when you no longer can, it will because you are in jail for doing so; thus, the following statement does not apply to you. However, for those facing the two former dilemmas, here comes along this guide to World Wide Web sites like a God-send.
Before we dive into these startling sites, allow me to make a few choice recommendations so that you may enjoy this experience to the greatest possible extent. Many of the Web sites in this list along with others require that you have special applications/software, most of which can be downloaded off the Web itself for free. First off, it would be in your best surfin’ interest to download or upgrade to the newest version of Netscape Navigator, which is 3.01, at http://www.netscape.com As a bonus, this version also contains two useful plug-ins (i.e., software): Java and QuickTime. In addition, it would be beneficial for said surfer to download the Shockwave application (http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave) in order to properly view animation and the RealAudio application (http://www.realaudio.com) for listening to sounds.
Don’t expect me to hold your hand and guide you to the most obvious sites to check out. You can use your favorite search engine and hunt for Howard Stern, Beavis & Butt-Head, Simpsons, and Star Trek sites to your heart’s content of which you will find tons so you don’t need me for that. Okay, stop your whining! I will even help you with conducting a thorough Web search. Enter the following address for Kon Net Search: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/konrad/sucher.htm The Kon Net Search page contains seven popular search engines among them Yahoo! (which acts as a table of contents) and Alta Vista (which acts as an index). This site gives you the ability to either conduct searches from this page or to hyperlink to the respective engine’s Web pages.
Are you finally ready to explore the odd? the entertaining? the informative? the musical? the educational? the unique? the stimulating? the useful (and the useless)? Welcome to your World Wide Web cheat sheet! SURF’S UP!
